O Cão da Serra da Estrela é uma raça globalmente saudável

Saúde

The Estrela is known for being a robust and resistant breed, globally healthy, with a strong immune system and an average longevity of between 12 and 14 years - the result of the ancestral practice of breeding, over centuries, by shepherds, which copies natural selection.

However, like any other breed, it may have a predisposition to certain health problems. The most common is hip dysplasia, but others, including elbow dysplasia, dilated cardiomyopathy and stomach torsion, have some expression in the breed.

Health
protocols

The APCSE is preparing protocols with veterinary hospitals and practises in various parts of Portugal, which will provide members with discounts when carrying out screenings for genetic diseases existing in the breed:

Health surveys

TheAPCSE Health Committee, in colaboration with the Estrela Mountain Dog Club, from the United Kingdom, will carry out two surveys on the health of the Estrela Mountain Dog, one of them aimed at veterinarians, the other for breeders and owners. This initiative aims to determine the general health status of the breed and the expression of the most common hereditary diseases. Both surveys are confidential, only the Health Committee will have access to the information and nothing but general breed data will be made public.

Participate, help the breed to become even healthier!
